2) Innovation choosing the right method of communication is very essential. Other provisions like the right tools for teaching, the involvement of parents for programs, and placement of desks in the classroom are to be thought of prior to the class. The only growth that is instilled in a child by his or her surrounding is the growth of his or her character, the growth of their value system.

Value system is intrinsic to every human being. We all have our own set of values that define our character. Along with everything else, to a great extent it is values and beliefs that make us unique. The first foreground of the value system is laid by the parents and family. Home is the first place where we learn certain values. It is with this formative values that we enter the school. The school adds on and builds a value system on the base laid down by the family. Hence when you see and observe an individual, it is both the family and the schools influence on their character and value system that defines them. Values imparted by school:

As mentioned already school teaches the child some very basic and essential values that will help the child to grow and become a better and more responsible adult. Here are some values that the school inculcate in the child:

Discipline: in the school, the child learns that there is a certain time for everything. In this way the child learns the virtue of discipline.

Teamwork: schools always encourage the children to form small groups and work unitedly within groups. In this manner, the child learns teamwork and learns to cooperate with others.

Humility: no matter what economic background the children come from, in school everyone is same. In this manner the child learns to stay grounded and down to earth.

Awareness on Adaption

Yesterday we did a workshop for highschool students and preschool students at the “Copenhagen Youth Climate Camp 09″ (in Danish).  Besides learning how to do a workshop in a short time, another interesting aspect of this workshop was to find out how much the youth in general know about the climate issue and how we can communicate our message.

The youth know a lot already on how to cut down the greenhouse gas emissions, and are keen to find ways in which they can lower their own emissions and increase peoples awareness on climate problems. Issues as lowering the CO2 emissions are well known and discussed. You call this Mitigation; how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is really important in both the short and long term.

But we also need to have focus on the people getting affected by the changes in the climate. We are not so affected in the North, but if you go to the south people are dying from these changes. The big floodings in Bangladesh, drought in Kenya, Tanzania and a lot of other countries in Africa. Therefore there is an aspect in the climate debate which have to focus on Adaptation; how we can adapt to these changes. And added to this is the climate debt, we as north have polluted and thereby been a big reason for these changes. Because of this we owe the South a lot of money, and have to pay these back in addition to our current aid.

But general awareness of the importance of adaptation is not significant. This was very clear yesterday with the youth. They know and understand the mitigation part, but they have a harder time getting the grasp of adaptation and what they can do. It is also very much easier to mitigate. You can turn of the light, save water etc. but how do you do anything about adaptation? Because who is it that should pay of the debt? – Decision makers. Therefore adaptation will mostly focus on creating awareness and affect desicion makers. That is more abstract that the concreteness of turning of your light.

If the overall focus of the population is mitigation, then the politicians will focus on this as well, so we need to create an awareness on adaptation…because  it is important to affect the decision makers to pay of the climate debt. Having a focus on adaptations can make a difference for the persons whose everyday life is  affected, maybe it is more short term than mitigation, but not least important.

What is happening with the climate issue on NGO and grassroot level

Have taken on a job to find out what other NGO’s are doing about the climate challenges, here is a couple:

Greenpeace:

  • They have an event where they are trying to stop the creation of a third runway at Heathrow airport. They buy the land so the airport cannot expand.
  • Also they work on projects where you can make your town climate friendly by putting pressure on the local politicians to use renewable energy in their plans etc. Check out the link, it is quite cool. But for now I think it is in UK.

Peoples Climate Action:

  • This is a umbrella organisation in Denmark that creates a framework for coordination of actions in Denmark until COP15. They have a calender for actions where you can get inspiration and put your own idea.


CLIMATE CAMP:
– This is a group who is making camps mostly around UK and from there take action on climate change. It is made by volunteers.

Every Camp for Climate Action event weaves four key themes: education, direct action, sustainable living, and building a movement to effectively tackle climate change both resisting climate crimes and developing sustainable solutions. Because the future is not what it used to be.”

CAN:

“The Climate Action Network (CAN) is a worldwide network of over 450 Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working to promote government and individual action to limit human-induced climate change to ecologically sustainable levels.

CAN members work to achieve this goal through information exchange and the coordinated development of NGO strategy on international, regional, and national climate issues. CAN
has seven regional offices which co-ordinate these efforts in Africa, Australia, Central and Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Latin America, North America, South Asia, and
Southeast Asia.

CAN members place a high priority on both a healthy environment and development that“meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland Commission). Climate Action Network’s vision is to
protect the atmosphere while allowing for sustainable and equitable development worldwide.”

FUTURE GENERATION CAMP:

Another link for the group staying in Denmark is a “Future generation climate camp” at Copenhagen university. On the 23th of October they will make a 24 hour climate camp where the participants are discussing how we can move on in the development of future climate solutions. Maybe we could set adaptation on the agenda.

Calender of events until November:

September 24th -25th : Pittsburg G20 summit. Leaders from the 20 most powerful countries will meet to ”try and figure out a path that will see an end to the global economic meltdown”.

September 18th – 25th : Climate week in NYC. 50 events around the city. Including:

  • Cool your School

    • ex where the students show how far the sea level will rise at their school on the walls.

  • Human sculpture of climate changes in a park

September 28th – October 9th : UN Climate meeting in Bangkok – they will try to come to an agreement on the new climate treaty

October 24th – 350.org’s international day of climate action.

  • Organize an action in cities all around the world

  • Incorporate the number 350, send pictures etc. to 350.

  • Why 350? – Because we need to reduce carbon dioxide concentrations to a maximum of 350 parts per million (ppm) (in danish milliontedel) in the atmosphere.
